ACS Modular delivered a modular cargo handling solution for Teesside Airport following its designation as part of the Teesside Freeport Zone.
The project involved converting an existing hangar into a fully operational cargo handling facility.
The Challenge
Teesside Airport required a cargo operation to be established, even though there was no dedicated cargo facility in place at the time. As a result, the operation needed to be adapted to make use of the existing infrastructure, ensuring that cargo handling could still be carried out safely and efficiently within the available resources.
Key challenges included:
- Conversion of an existing wartime hangar
- Implementation of airside and landside security boundaries
- Delivering a scalable cargo handling system
- Minimising capital investment for initial operations
The ACS Solution
ACS deployed its patented CargoBoX modular cargo handling systems, allowing screening infrastructure to be manufactured and tested off-site before installation. The facility included two cargo screening lines capable of handling different freight sizes.
The Delivery
While modular cargo systems were manufactured off-site, the hangar underwent minor modifications to accommodate freight movement and security requirements. This parallel delivery approach reduced overall project duration.
Outcome
The project delivered a scalable cargo handling facility, designed to support both current operational requirements and future growth in demand. This flexible infrastructure enables the airport to progressively expand its cargo operations over time, improving capacity, efficiency, and resilience as activity increases.
