ACS Modular delivered a new turnkey baggage handling facility for London City Airport as part of its capital development programme. The facility was constructed within a highly constrained airside environment while maintaining full airport operations.
The Challenge
The new baggage facility was required to be constructed on active aircraft stands adjacent to the terminal, positioned above a historic dry dock structure with significant structural constraints.
Key challenges included:
- Limited structural support for foundations
- Proximity to the airport’s ATC tower
- Adjacent live aircraft stands and taxiways
- Requirement for integration with existing check-in systems
The ACS Solution
ACS designed a modular facility capable of housing two floors of baggage handling equipment without traditional foundations. The project utilised the ACS BaggageBoX system and modular link bridges constructed from converted shipping containers.
The Delivery
Off-site manufacture allowed testing and commissioning of the baggage screening system before delivery to site, significantly reducing on-site installation time.
Outcome
The project enabled London City Airport to deliver a modern baggage handling facility in a location that would otherwise have been unsuitable for traditional construction.
